Whitewash Protest

Based on ISTD Project Brief - Protest!
This project is created as a series of interactive posters targeting Singapore’s different policies over our independence years.
In this project, I draw attention to three policies that have been impacted by this whitewashing agenda. These policies were chosen because they had a substantial impact in Singapore’s development. The policies are: Speak Mandarin Campaign (1979) Integrated Program (2004) 6.9 Million Population White Paper (2013) by printing the fringe narratives in white, on a white poster, it is not immediately obvious that these narratives even exist in the first place.

Through the unorthodox usage of white space, the viewer is invited to look deeper into the piece to seek out the hidden narratives. The piece argues that a willingness to disturb the facade of cleanliness is necessary to change the status quo. Only when the viewer taint the posters will the fringe narratives become obvious.

Whitewash Protest

Fringe narratives, especially dissenting voices towards new policies, are often whitewashed away in the name of progress.
